I woke up to the sound of beeping machines and that strong stench of bleach and cleaning materials that you only smell in the hospital. Darkness was slowly replaced with light as I opened my eyes. The first thing my eyes landed on was Raleigh sitting in the corner rocking back and forth. I shifted my head to find a doctor and nurse whispering to themselves as they looked down at a folder filled with papers.

“Ra–”

I couldn’t even get her name out before she was jumping up and rushing over to me. The hug that I thought I was about to get never came. Instead, both of her small fists grabbed two handfuls of my shirt and Raleigh shook me softly.

“Don’t you ever scare me like that again, Haven. I asked you over and over again what the hell was wrong with you and what did you say?”

“Raleigh…”

“Do you know how scared I was when I saw you on the floor like that?”

“I’m fine, love.”

“You said that earlier before you blacked out and obviously that was a lie!”

Her anger made her feelings for me real for the both of us. She was mad because she cared, and I felt bad as hell about putting her through that. I knew the second I took those two hits to the head while sparring that something was off, but I refused to say anything to her or Sammy about it.

“Baby,” I took her hands into mine and kissed them. Her eyes watered and the anger that filled them when I first woke up started to dissolve, “I’m sorry for scaring you, but I feel fine, Raleigh. Honestly.”

I pulled her down to me and kissed her lips. Her cheek. When I made it to her ear I whispered, “It’s okay, love,” before kissing it. By the time I made it to her neck her shoulders were relaxing.

Raleigh hugged me tightly.

Her lips were at my neck as she mumbled, “I was so scared, Haven,” faintly.

“I know, baby. I’m glad you were there with me, though.”

“Do you really feel okay? I don’t trust anything your lying ass says at this point.”

I laughed as I hugged her back and looked at the doctor and nurse. Unable to hear what they were saying, I only had their body language and facial expressions to go off of. By the way the doctor looked over at me and shook his head at whatever the nurse was saying I knew that whatever he had to say couldn’t have been good. He started walking towards me and my grip around my baby loosened. The last thing I wanted to do was worry Raleigh even more, so I subtly lifted my hand to keep him from speaking until I had Raleigh out of the room.

“I need you to do me a favor, Raleigh.”

She lifted herself from my chest and nodded.

“Take my phone outside and call Sammy. Let him know where I am and that I won’t be coming back to finish my training for the day.
